GENERAL MEETING INFORMATION
The Society of Urologic Oncology Fall Course will be held October 7 – 9, 2010 at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. This course is designed to assist the urologist and urological practice which wants additional information regarding, 1) systemic therapies of urological malignancies: better understanding of both the clinical and practical aspects required for instituting a systemic therapy; 2) urological interventional therapy: specifically, a hands on lab experience to learn percutaneous and minimally invasive approaches to accessible renal lesions; and 3) clinical trials: understanding the why and the how for initiating a successful clinical trials program presented by experienced academic and community urologic leaders. The urology landscape has changed and will continue to do so.
Target Audience
This course is designed primarily for urologists who concentrate on genitourinary (GU) cancer in private practice and wish to be involved in the total care of the patient. In many cases the pertinent urologist will be part of a large urology practice group.

COURSE NEEDS & LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Course Needs
Urologic oncology care mandates taking care of the whole patient by exercising both cognitive and technical skills. This tradition is being challenged by a variety of disciplines. Interventional radiology focuses on the procedural in isolation from the necessary global treatment while medical oncology focuses on advanced disease and the delivery of chemotherapy. The Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) has concluded that knowledge about the organ system, the disease process, the continuity of care and the treatment and post-treatment outcomes, which are essential for optimal patient care and scientific progress, lie in the domain of urology. Urologic oncology care should be multidisciplinary and should include the disciplines of urologic oncology and medical oncology. Ideally someone needs to be a team leader and this should be a urologist who has training and interest in urologic oncology. The SUO has developed a strategy to address this issue which includes beginning a curriculum that provides training for residents and practicing urologists to meet the challenges that exist in the “nonsurgical” treatment of the urologic patient. Accordingly, this course will present the practical aspects of the systemic therapy for the GU cancer patient and also the practical aspects of percutaneous renal mass ablation and prostate ablation technologies. Recent advances in the therapeutics of urological malignancies have provided significant changes in how we can manage our patients, these as well as future advances will offer patients many new treatment options and urologists new research opportunities. This course will also provide the foundation for understanding the why and the how for initiating a successful clinical trials program.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Assess and utilize (when appropriate) the optimal therapy for GU oncology patients who require systemic treatment
- Evaluate and utilize the optimal interventional ablation therapies (if appropriate) for kidney and prostate tumors
- Determine practicalities of setting up a systemic therapy, interventional therapy and clinical trial environments in your practice
